With the Holiday’s and Gem Show season approaching, I’ve been making new pieces for my inventory. I sold a few pieces at last year’s Gem Show, so I’ve made new ones to replace them. I obtained a number of new figures, minerals and Geodes to work with and made some outstanding pieces with them. I have many hours in creating these pieces; on some, more than others. The time cutting, grinding, polishing, and wood and metal work all add up to a lot of time for each piece. One that I sold was one of my favorites, I called it “Amethyst Pirates”. It was a thick slice of Amethyst to which I installed a piece of smoked glass to one face. I then created a hollow space underneath it in which I created a scene with a “Kraken” taking down a Pirate ship. I installed a light inside that, when lit, allowed you to see through the smoked glass and into the bottom of the cavity to view the scene. I cut, and fit a thin slice of Brazilian Agate to the face of the Amethyst ring, for a lid.
I had this piece for quite a while. It always attracted a lot of attention, and I’d get many fine compliments on it. So I decided to make another to replace it. On this one , though, instead of a “Kraken”, I used a “Giant Squid”. It turned out a bit larger, and heavier, but is just as beautiful as the first one, if not more so. I’ve had more than 30 steps involved to create this one, and many, many hours to complete it.
